Art serves no purpose
“Art serves no purpose”: this expression, read between the lines by Eric Collet who added: “watch TV instead” raises the question: “why is art so important to us?”. Troubled by the idea that one can actually believe that “art serves no purpose,” by displaying this quotation on the cover of this special edition we wanted to defend energetically the conviction that artistic creation is essential to the survival of our civilization. To deny pure creation is to deny our humanity. Art fulfils a functional role, that of facilitating self-expression, or that of a people or of a period. It consists of a sum of experiences and knowledge, from which arises an enlarged visual memory, going beyond simple contemplation. We can summarize by saying that art is a quest to express possible visions of reality. Without art, the world would be very different. Art refines tastes and social habits, and enriches life from an aesthetic perspective: it represents a conquest of the spirit in the service of all humanity. Personally, I would say that “art for art’s sake” serves no purpose this is just as absurd a message, touching only those who consent to be a victim of the prevailing vacuum and who do not embrace the more uplifting aspects of the world. As Picasso said: “There are painters who reduce a sun to a yellow dot; and those who enlarge a yellow dot to a sun.” Let’s reduce the widening gap between the social environment and that of the home, so that the peculiar divergence of taste between our idea of progress and that of our daily lives merges together. If art serves no purpose, then neither do poetry, music, culture, emotion, joy, friendship or life. So whether you decide to admire a work of art of watch TV it’s up to you!
Results of the competition “HS06”
We are delighted to say that we received more than 250 submissions for the competition! Because of the quantity, quality and originality of the projects, the choice was very diffcult. Many of these works could have been featured on the cover of idpure, but after lengthy discussions our jury finally selected that of Eric Collet. This daring choice is the result of a near-impossible decision as we all know, art is something that by nature cannot be judged. By far the finest and most graphic entry, it has the advantage of representing all the projects submitted, thru a message which says a lot. The whole team at IDPURE cannot express our gratitude to all the participants for taking part in this competition Congratulations and Well Done for your inspiration. The best bit is inside the magazine! To see all the cover projects click here.
