Progressive graphic art
“Trend,” it keeps coming back to us. This catch-all word, which is the stamp of our visual era, and whose definition is as elastic as our ancestors’ suspenders, in itself summarizes all the perverse contradictions of our society. Let’s imagine for a moment that we replace this ugly word “trend” with “attitude.” A graphic attitude which would draw the media’s attention, which would enable us to win all the awards of the international competitions, receive all the invitations to conferences, and be the source of inspiration and discussion. At least for a while. An idea which could address this problem would be to judge a project by the idea behind it, its added graphic value, and the way in which the message is communicated. As with its initial usefulness, graphic art should be examined according to what it brings to the message. A competition entry should be considered at the visual level, but should not be awarded a prize simply because the design is brilliant. Although absolutely superb, it still happens far too often that the graphic design clouds over the message. So the question one should ask about each visual creation should be??: “Should I play to the gallery as an artist, or aim for its usability as a graphic designer?” This constitutes a small exercise in style which could trace an urgently needed line between the graphic designer and the artist, and define a group and a direction that would demonstrate to what extent it’s important to understand why – and towards what – we are running in a fragile society where everything is accelerating.
